We would like to recognize and celebrate the International Week of Deaf People taking place from September 23 to 29, 2024 and the International Day of Sign Languages on September 23, 2024.
The International Week of Deaf People is celebrated annually across the world during the last full week of September and the theme for 2024 is “Sign up for Sign Language Rights”. The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) has outlined daily themes for each day including:
September 23
– International Day of Sign Languages: Sign Up for Sign Language Rights
September 24
– Inclusive Education
September 25
– Sign Language Advocacy
September 26
– Building Resilient Deaf Communities
September 27
– Diversity in Deaf communities
September 28
– Deaf Culture Celebrations
September 29
– Investing in the Future of Deaf Communities
The themes are significant to Deaf staff and students in Ontario’s Provincial Schools for the Deaf and to the Deaf community.
Each year, the International Day of Sign Languages serves as a reminder of the significance of sign languages as a means of communication. The day aims to raise awareness and celebrate the sign language culture and promote linguistic diversity.
At the Provincial and Demonstration Schools Branch (PDSB), we look forward to celebrating and recognizing the International Week of Deaf People and International Day of Sign Languages.
